More Artists Are Making Six Figures From Spotify (and the Numbers Keep Climbing)

For all the hand-wringing over whether streaming can support working musicians, Spotify’s latest numbers offer a pretty strong counterpoint:

  • In 2025, more than 13,800 artists generated at least $100,000 from Spotify alone, according to the company. That’s nearly 1,400 more artists than a year earlier.
  • Spotify says more artists are now generating at least $100,000 annually from the platform than were earning $50,000 from Spotify just five years ago.

That doesn’t mean every artist uploading music is suddenly buying a vacation home in Malibu. Far from it. But it does suggest the number of artists reaching meaningful revenue levels continues to expand.

Six Figures Is Becoming Less of an Outlier

Spotify’s data shows that crossing the $100,000 threshold is increasingly becoming something artists can sustain rather than simply hit during one unusually successful year.

More than one-third of artists currently generating at least $100,000 annually from Spotify have increased their royalties tenfold in less than a decade.

There’s also evidence of staying power. Of the artists who first crossed the $100,000 mark in 2022, eight in 10 remained above that level every year afterward. That matters because the real test of the streaming economy isn’t whether an artist can score one viral hit. It’s whether they can turn audience growth into something resembling a durable career.

The Artist Economy Is Getting More Global

The artists reaching these revenue levels increasingly aren’t coming from the traditional center of the U.S. music business. Among artists who surpassed $100,000 in Spotify royalties in 2025, 85% were based outside the United States. A majority also debuted during the 2020s.

That points to one of streaming’s biggest structural changes: artists can now build substantial audiences without necessarily following the old path through U.S. radio, physical distribution and major retail exposure. That allows artists to make money in new ways.

Spotify even notes that more artists are feeling that six-figure shimmer annually from its platform today than were stocked on record-store shelves during the peak of the CD era.

And That $100,000 Isn’t the Whole Story

Spotify represents only one piece of an artist’s streaming revenue. The company estimates that artists generating $100,000 from Spotify may be earning roughly three times that amount when royalties from all streaming services are included. Add other recorded-music revenue streams, and the total could climb higher still.

The Pop Music Insiders Take

Here’s the slightly inconvenient part for anyone still arguing that streaming has made it impossible to build a music career: apparently nobody told those 13,800 artists. The more interesting story may be the growing tier below superstardom: artists generating enough revenue to keep recording, touring and building audiences without necessarily becoming household names.
