Pop music has always shaped the cultural moment, but new research from The Harris Poll shows just how dramatically young listeners are transforming the industry. Their findings reveal a generation that consumes more music, discovers it differently, and embraces global genres at unprecedented levels, all while driving the trends that brands and artists now chase.
According to the survey, 72% of U.S. adults listen to music, and more than half do so daily. But the real engine of today’s pop landscape is Gen Z and young Millennials. Seventy‑six percent of adults under 30 listen to music, and 81% of them listen at least once a day. Even more striking: 71% listen several times a day. For a generation raised on constant connectivity, music is identity.

Pop Borders Are Expanding
Pop remains the most widely enjoyed genre in America, with 83% of music listeners saying they like it. Among adults under 30, that number jumps to 90%, alongside strong enthusiasm for hip‑hop, rap, and R&B. But what’s changing is the definition of “pop.” Younger listeners blend traditional pop with global sounds, creating a more diverse mainstream than ever before.
World music, including Latin, K‑pop, Caribbean, and Afrobeat, is booming. Fifty‑one percent of Gen Z and Millennials enjoy world genres, and K‑pop stands out as a favorite: 58% of adults under 30 say they like it. TikTok users show similar tastes, with 55% enjoying world music and 57% favoring K‑pop. Pop’s future is undeniably global.
Discovery Is Global
The Harris Poll highlights a major shift in how young listeners find new music. While public radio still introduces nearly half of all listeners to new songs, social media dominates for Gen Z: 56% discover new music through the platforms they use. On fast‑growing platforms like Twitch, Snapchat, and TikTok, that number rises to 70–76%.

Viral audio clips, dance challenges, and fan‑driven edits have become launchpads for emerging artists. And younger listeners are quick to move on: Half say they stop listening once a song becomes “too popular.”
Trend cycles have never been faster.
Why Brands Are Tuning In
Music’s cultural influence extends far beyond playlists. The Harris Poll found that 37% of listeners are more likely to buy from a brand that partners with a musician they like. And among users of fast‑growing platforms like TikTok and Snapchat, nearly 60% are more likely to shop with a brand that features a song they enjoy in its ads.
For marketers, the message is clear: sound is strategy.
The Beat Goes On
Pop music is evolving at warp speed. With Gen Z driving discovery, global genres rising, and social platforms shaping what breaks next, the future of pop looks more diverse, more dynamic, and more digital than ever. Thanks to insights from The Harris Poll, we can see exactly how today’s listeners are remixing tomorrow’s trends.
